Steppe stewardship partnership
Village committees shaping how conservation work happens on their own land.
Working through existing village structures rather than creating new ones, this partnership put decisions about where conservation activity happens into the hands of the communities living there.
Committees in four villages now review and approve annual workplans, and a share of programme funding is allocated directly to priorities they identify.

How the work has developed
Activities and outputs for each year of the project. Further years are added as the work continues.
Annual workplans were drafted and agreed by the committees themselves, with SCA staff attending only as observers.
A fixed share of the annual budget was placed under committee control, with reporting kept to a single page.
Two further villages joined after visiting the pilot sites.
Two villages agreed to pilot the approach, each nominating a committee through their existing council rather than through an election run by us.
